Dragonlance: The Heroes of Kyre

A Return To Kyre
The adventure continues

The curtain opened on the city of Solanthus, where Solomon Star and his heroic crew, Yog the Cleric and Agatha the cleric and Pete the knight attested to his heroic deeds, and Solomon was promoted to a Knight of the Sword.

After purchasing many new items, including horses and pavilion tents, and hiring some new squires and servants, the Heroes set out for home in Kyre, and a good week long vacation. Over the course of the week, each became aware of a few rumors and events (Plot Hooks!) that excited comment and action when the party again met up in the Weeping Widow Tavern.

Agatha discovered a secret door in the basement of her family’s dilapidated tavern, while Yog learned of a derelict temple by the northern gate; Pete recalled the rumor of dragons to the north of the city in the mountains and a story of a long lost child named Rossimore who dissapeared before the last war. Solomon was greatly concerned about the lack of soldiers to defend Kyre, and sought to rally troops to the cause of justice and defense of Kyre.

After downing a few pints together, the party set off to explore the ruined temple and the secret passageway—which were conveniently close to one another. The church was peaceful and Gothic in its nighttime beauty, but nothing of note was discovered. All of the former religious markings had been destroyed in times past. Yog and Agatha vowed to reopen the temple under the auspices of the Gods of Good. The party then explored the tavern, with is broken chairs and tables and vandalized windows.

The secret door, located behind a shattered wine cask, lead down into a basement filled with boxes of nuts and furs (perhaps stolen from some northern noble?) and a shrine to the evil god Hiddukel, god of lies and treachery. It came out then that Agatha’s family were all evil and nasty, and that its likely they helped run a thieves guild or something similar in years past. It appeared that they had fled the city, but with plenty of time to clear out all evidence and treasure. In a sub-basement, the party found prison cells, one containing a finger with a simple brass ring, and a broken Solomanic Knight’s dagger.

Heading further down the stairs, the party came to a rushing torrent—an underground river or aqueduct. There was space for a boat to be tied, but no boat, and no way to progress further without getting wet. SPLASH! Into the water went Yog, and the party followed. It appeared that they were exploring some kind of underground sewer or water system—built in an age past. Rusty iron bars prevented the party from following every passageway, but Agatha was brawny and opened them up! Exploring around, the party found a host of water beetles that fought to the death in a bloody skirmish, and a cold waterfall that was the source of much (or all?) of the water in the sewer. They finally discovered a second platform, this one with a tiny boat—they rowed it back to the start and crashed in the inn for the night.

The next morning, a bell began tolling across the city, and the party went to investigate. Sir Jormund Uth Tammo had called a war council! Orders had come in that he was to organize a scouting party of the southern lands of Lemmish in preparation of the coming invasion. New information was needed of the forces and defenses of that land. The party was tasked with this quest, and to leave in two days. They learned of Castle Wallguard, a historic fort in the south, the village of Wayfold, and its lord Wal, as well as the village of Shelm, near by Bitch Creek. Rumor has it that the humans of Lemmish are dissatisfied by the Hobgoblin occupation and that they will greet the Solomanic invasion as liberators!!!

Wrapping up the session, The Heroes worked together to rally new troops using the new team base, the Bronze Dragon Inn, as a recruiting center. Each party member had a hand in it, even Terraxis the Bronze showed up and terrified the people. In all 10 new soldiers were recruited—Huzzah!

Merrow Invasion, Dragonlances Recovered, and a Draconic Reveal
End of Chapter 1

As a massive typhoon gathered off of the coast of Ansalon, Solomon Star and his fellow companions huddled at the Salt Horse tavern in the village of Halter Wood. Time and tide were conspiring to bring an end to the first chapter of this heroic adventure.

After consulting with the dwarven mariner Keenan, recently rescued from the Merrow pens (two adventures previously) Solomon Star, Sadie the Huntress, Yogg, Beltran Half-Elven, and Snirf the Gnome headed out to find the shipwreck of the Raven and the lost crate of dragonlances. Keenan suggested that the growing typhoon might sweep away the wreck and all hope of finding the lances. After a few hours walk south along the coast, Kennan sighted the derelict ship, sunk off some shoals. The party quaffed a potion of water breathing and walked out to the wreck—finding two nasty merrow guardians waiting for them! The battle was severely in the favor of the aquatic enemies, and with much injury and heroic blood spilled, the heroes were eventually successful. They found a crate of silk, preserved with wax against the water, and after long minutes of searching (and as the potion was wearing off) they found a broken crate with dragonlances!! All 8 were recovered successfully.

The party trudged home in heavy weather, covered with mud and blood and with soggy boots. They cleaned themselves naked in the rain (or at least the Gnome cleric Snirf did). The party conversed with Terraxis, who offered a religious debate with Yogg as to who was a cooler god, Paladine or Kiri-Jolith. Both dudes went to bed without convincing the other. The next day the clerics used all their spells to heal up the party, and by nightfall the little Tavern was socked in with the Typhoon. At nightfall, Terraxis returned to the tavern to tell the party of an approaching warband of Merrows! The final showdown began!

Cries of bloody murder were heard on the far end of town as a band of Ogresses slaughered a house of innocent people. The elves took up their bows and a perch on the roof, while the rest of team engaged the ogresses. Meanwhile a band of ogre warriors led by ORUGAN the DESTROYER and an ogre cleric of Zebonim (evil goddess of the sea) came on shore by the Tavern. The ogres engaged with the Elves on the roof, utterly stabbing and pitchforking Sadie and Yogg off the roof of the Tavern. They lay on the edge of death. But the knights of Solamnia rode to the defense of the elves, Solomon star engaging with Orugan and Pete Uth Drakkon engaging the cleric. The rest of the party healed up the wounded elves and finished off the Ogresses.

Pete made a heroic blow against the cleric, who cast a fear spell, forcing him to run away. A dark watery shape began to rise out of the water, and the bronze head of a massive DRAGON was seen. TERRAXIS the Bronze Dragon came to the aid of the party, unleashing a bolt of lighting that smote the evil cleric completely. Terraxis egged on Solomon, making fun of him for missing so many times even though the escalation die was in his favor (though a brief dragon tear was shed as the screaming horse died). Solomon Star fought the Ogre chieftain in single combat, first on horseback, but on the death of the heroic mare Alicia, on foot. It was hard fought but he with a final critical hit, Solomon Slew the Savage Ogre! With that awesome natural 20 that cut the ogre in half, Terraxis proclaimed that Solomon Star was worthy to have a bronze dragon as a companion. Thus Terraxis the Bronze joined Solomon Star! Huzzah!

The session wrapped up with an exploration of the merrow caves, and Snirf and Alicia rolled 20s to find all the treasure, which amounted to something like 20,000 steel pieces worth of treasure, including some ancient artifacts (though no magical treasure). The party took the Osprey ship back to Caregroth and traveled over land to the city of Solanthus where they were fetted as heroes for bringing the dragonlances.


The Test of High Sorcery
A Cleric's Sacrifice

After a long payer-hiatus, the Heroes of Kyre set out from Halter Wood in search of the Tower of High Sorcery. Much shenanigans occurred, including these personal highlights:

Ilyena traveled with her three companions and eventually found the tower of sorcery, where she met Archmage Nobanion Sylvarian, and her grandfather Illdor. She took the test of sorcery that had three parts, past present and future. The past was a quest to escape the throne room of the doomed king Lorac of Sylvanesti, and in this quest she found her aunt’s lost magic blade. The second test was a bit of an obstacle course and a fight against Bertrand the Crown Knight who she successfully hypnotized. The third test was a brutal throwdown fight against a bunch of draconians. Illyena lost and died.

Except that Agatha, Cleric of Paladine made a heroic sacrifice to bring her back from the dead, thus ensuring that she passed the test of high sorcery, because you only fail if you die, so ipso facto, she must have passed since she is now alive. Agatha also scored some sweet Royal Jelly from Illdor.

Kyras Half-Elven met with Trevor, leader of the elven warband and discovered that his father’s family name was probably Sylvarian, but that they don’t have a ton of political power lately since the destruction of the capital city. While meeting with the Conclave of Sorcerers, Kyras overheard Dalamar the Dark demanding that the Conclave turn over the Arkenkey artifact to “the Master of Past and Present” Raistlin Majere.

Pete Uth Drakkon put up a heroic fight in the final battle against the draconians, personally slaying about 10 of them and shielding the other party members with his lithe sexy body (and plate mail armor!).

The entire party woke up in cozy beds in the Tower of High Sorcery, and are ready to journey back south after only about a 3 day absence from the rest of the party in Halter Wood. But first, perhaps the Sorcerers have magic items to sell?

Quest to the South Part 2
Heroic Rescue from the Merrow Pens

After settling in to the small fishing village of Halter Wood, Agatha Onesti, Cleric of Paladine and Sadie the Huntress decided to take a short trip down the coast. They rented a boat from Skrumpy (aka Gramps) and the three of them set off to find the fabled seaweed “Merrow Hair” that once chewed will let one breath under water. About three hours down the coast, the ship came under attack. Literally! A merrow warrior punched and clawed his way through the bottom of the small fishing boat. It was touch and go there for a while, but no one died but the Merrow, who went down in a hail of arrows from Sadie’s bow.

Deciding that a water approach was close to suicide, the two heroes headed down the coast road, eventually meeting up with Solomon Star who was scouting the area. The party traveled up a rocky and watery ravine, encountering a raiding party of Ogres and Ogresses bent on eating and killing. They slaughtered the ogres easily (much to the delight of the DM who was worried about the monsters being too strong). One Ogress almost escaped but Sadie put in arrow in her ass and killed her dead. No survivors meant that they approached the merrow caves without being spotted. They traversed a sharp waterfall, and Solomon discovered a ledge behind the falling water. Inside was a narrow entrance to a deep water filled cave, and a dead body and some adventuring gear, later identified as the local hero of Halter Wood, Roy, who had disappeared a few weeks back. He was a dessicated and rotting corpse. Eww.

After dropping into the flat plain below the waterfall, the party noticed a pen of slaves and animals being held by the Ogres as food. They worked to rescue the human survivors, some from the village and some from the wreck of the ship Raven. A few escaped up the rope ladder before four strong ogre warriors burst from the nearby cave. The two in the lead were Irog and Zrog, the Merrow leutenants!!! A horrible melee ensued, where Sadie fired her bow from above with startling accuracy, and Solomon threw his enchanted Javelin, powered with the might of lightning! This softened up the ogres, and only one wailing weeping mother was slain by the ogres. The party rescued 7 lives that day, including the sailor boy Paul, who was the most coherent and excited NPC (and would make a good squire…)!

The Party returned to Halter Wood as heroes, encountering Elsie, the girlfriend and betrothed of Roy who wept and beat her breast. She swooned into Solomon’s arm and a titty brushed his hand erotically. Who knows what romance awaits those two?

The party also encountered a mysterious man named Terraxis who claimed to be an explorer of shipwrecks. He has tawny tanned skin and beautiful amber hair. He traded a few potions to the party for this and that, and Agatha traded her share of Roy’s loot for a powerful scroll of Paladine. Not trusting his motives, Agatha cast her detect alignment spell, only to find Terraxis is lawful good!

What awaits the party in the next session, who can say? Will the elves travel to the tower of high sorcery? Will the knights find the lost dragonlances? Will Solomon get laid? Only time will tell!

Quest to the South Part 1
The Exposition Continues

In a whirlwind adventure that took the Heroes of Kyre hundreds of miles across the known world, the plot began to thicken. Solomon Star was knighted and given Solomon’s Quest to the South, both by Sir Uth Tammo and also by Lord Barrymore of the Rose, Lord Defender of the regional capital Solanthus. After gathering information from Frogmore the bartender of the Blue Staff Inn and the local priestess of Mishikal Tristaine, the heroes learned of the crate of 8 dragonlances that were lost in a shipping disaster when storm ogres from Ergoth attacked the ship Raven. Once the party moved down the main road to Caregroth, a major port city, they talked with the Raven’s captain, a man name Moonbeam, who told the party of sea monsters with glowing eyes and claws that attacked the ship as it fled the Storm Ogres. The crate of lances was last seen being taken forcefully by the sea monsters, later identified as Merrows, or sea ogres (different from the more civilized Storm Ogres).

The party took to sea on the Osprey, a fast moving caravel, for 200 steel and a promise to defend the ship—and defense was needed as the Osprey came under attack by 6 firedrakes searching for a tasty meal of human flesh. In the fearsome battle, many gouts of firey flame were unleashed, and the Minotaur sailor Daroka Ratsbane was badly burned. But she gave as good as she got, slashing a critical hit on a firedrake with her clabbard blade. The knights made a good show of cutting them apart, even though Pete was burned by the blood of the firedrake when he made a solid cut, and Agatha, Cleric of Paladine did good work healing the party. Some nameless NPC sailors were eaten.

After stopping briefly to rest and heal at the small elven town of Porlinost, and meeting Trevor the Elven Captain, the party sailed further down the coast to the tiny fishing village were the wreck of the Raven took place. A shady bartender pointed the party towards the Village Reeve, named Keanu, who told them a bit more about the wreck and told them of the Sea Ogre (Merrow) clan that has been demanding tribute from the tiny village. He offered food and shelter for the party to defeat the Merrows, and the party accepted. Resting and waiting for the arrival of the rest of the party, the Minotaur and others began to hatch a plot to draw the Merrows out so they could be slain on land, rather than in the water.

3) The crew of the Osprey may have tools to aid an underwater quest

A House full of Ogres
more adventurers assemble

After a week of rest, Ilyena of Sylvanesti and Kyras Half-Elven met up to exchange some spells from their spellbooks and to plan a dinner party. They invited Sir Uth Tammo and other nobles and party members to attend. Their they announced their intention for traveling to Qualinesti to seek out Rob’s father, and for the secret mission of traveling to the Tower of High Sorcery for Ilyena to take the Test of High Sorcery, to become a High Sorcerer. Uth Tammo didn’t seem impressed by Ilyena’s subterfuge, but he talked up Kyras about working as a spy, bringing him information from his many local fans at the bars and taverns of Kyras.

The Knights of Solamnia, Pete uth Drakkon and Solomon Star joined the party, along with a few other notables, including Beltran Half Elven a new squire of the crown, and Sadie the Huntress the companion of Ilyena, set off on an adventure north to the capital city of Solanthus, there to take the high road to the port city of Caergroth in hopes of finding a ship. The day passed most uneventfully, and the party talked to a few farmers, before stumbling upon a pavilion tent set up in some very ancient ruins, and a new party member, Yogg the Clericthe wild Silvanesti Elf cleric of KiriJolith, the good god of battle. The tent was occupied by Sir Uth Hallyo, a local noble and bit of a fop. He asked for the party’s aid in clearing out a host of goblins and ogres that had taken over his manor house and prevented the cutting of timber, very necessary in the rebuilding of both Kyre and Solanthus. The party agreed to help, for 100 steel pieces each, and a choice of weapons from Uth Hallyo’s stores.

The party rode north into the hills, passing the Mill at Carpenter’s Square, and meeting with some trappers traveling north along the ridgeline. They told the party two interesting rumors, one of the conflict between the farmers and the Rancher’s League, and that two Bronze dragons had been sighted flying over the mountains in this area. After leaving the trappers in peace, the party rode north into Jackson Pass, encountering a large band of goblins, which they slayed utterly and completely with a massive cavalry charge by the Knights and a short burst of arrows from the elves. The party approached the manor house, located prominently in the high vale beyond the pass. The elves sneaked up and around the house, finding a smaller side door where they engaged and killed two hobgoblins. The knights chose not to be heroic and burst open the front door, but instead circled around to the side door, and the whole party went in on foot. After entering the building and moving through a few small rooms, the Heroes met with a large party of ogres and hobgoblins; this time the ogres proved to be little challenge as Pete, Solomon, and Beltran took point, and the other party members circled around to find another entrance to the room. A few minutes of battle was all it took; the knights slayed the ogres, and the elves used their magic spells to down most of the hobs. A quick decisive battle, with very little loss of heroic blood. Huzzah!

The party explored the building, finding some ogre treasure and the promised store room of weapons in the basement. On ascending to the second floor rooftop, the party encountered a fearsome foe—a Griffon! It attacked Solomon Star, and then wheeled off into the sky to attack the gathered horses outside. Griffons love horsemeat more than any other. After being savaged by a brutal critical hit (claw/claw/bite), Pete’s heavy warhorse Pip was almost dead. He jumped on his back and rode him out of danger, while the rest of the team engaged in bloody animal murder against this fearsome beast. Ultimately the griffon was slain by Yogg’s arrow, and the party was able to rest once more.

The party retreated to Kyre to recover from their wounds, switch out wounded horses, and for Solomon Star to be knighted by Sir Uth Tammo. Solomon also voiced his desire to become a Knight of the Sword, and so Uth Tammo has proclaimed that Solomon is now Knight Errant on his personal quest to destroy evil, wright wrongs, and uncover lost things.
After a quick rest, the Heroes of Kyre again set out on the road to Solanthus.

Quest to the Silver Mine
The death of a heroic knight

After meeting their new companion, Rupert Half-Elven, the merry band of adventurers continued their patrol along the southern edge of Solamnia, in search of the The Lost Silver Mine rumored to be near that location.

After an uneventful day’s journey, the group sighted a low set of hills. After scouting around the hills, an approach from the south was made. Leading up into the hills, following a ravine, the adventurers sighted a large stone door. It was both a door, and it was a-jar. Upon approach the group was set upon by six goblin guards, throwing hand axes and fighting with spears. Four of these were dispatched and two sent flying into the mine complex. Entering the mines, the team found a foe too great to fight: Ogres! One ogre sent a spear flying at Rupert, wounding him grievously, and the “heroes” beat a hasty retreat.

Returning to Kyre, Rupert and Pete uth Drakkon reported to Sir Jormund uth Tammo that they had found a secret goblin base, and he tasked them with returning en-force to clear out the enemies. Ilyena of Sylvanesti made friends with the Gnomish cleric of Shinare, Snirflibus Geronimanioragus Koobolloo, while Kyras Half-Elven began to right the ruins of the grove of Branchalla on the top of the eastern hill in Kyras.

After two days of rest, the party set out again to the Silver Mine, making no stops. They devised a plan to burn a bush outside the door of cave to smoke out the ogres. And it worked! The ogres rushed out only to find the keen blades of three knights of Solamnia, since Solomon Star decided to join the group. Rupert got hit hard by an ogre club, Kyras killed the first ogre with help from the team, and then Rupert redeemed himself by killing the final ogre. Huzzah! The party entered the Silver Mine once more, to see a barreling cart of Hobgoblins entering the fray, led by their master Jungwasser. The fight was hot and heavy, with many Hobs fleeing and fighting this way and that, and Kyras casting his new Illusion spell to make it seem like more Knights were on the way. Jungwasser was damaged by an arrow, and he fled with some of his goons. But the final few Hobs tore into Rupert, slaying him utterly! Woe to the party!

After laying out Rupe’s body, the party continued into the mine. The entrance way was clearly carved by dwarves during the era after the Cataclysm, and was dedicated to Reorx the god of dwarves and crafts-persons. Constructed as a long hall with a track for a cart, the Heroes followed along the tunnels, finding a side passage filled with Cave Fishers. After a battle that was very tug-of-war, the Fishers were defeated and their treasure gained—A green stone box, a red gem necklace, and a platinum statue of Reorx. While a side passage was left unexplored, the party continued on to the back of the chamber to find Jungwasser.

The battle against the final hobs didn’t last long, since the enchantress just slept them all except ol’ Jungwasser, who ran to escape by way of a deep well. A sword slash from Pete seemed to end his life, as his body fell backwards into the well with a sploosh. After collecting the Hobs treasure, including 5,000 cp and 6 goats, the party returned to the city with the body of their fallen companion.

During a week off from adventuring, Pete uth Drakkon was knighted for his great work, and Soloman commended. Illyena learned some new spells, and Kyras began composing the future hit dirge, Song of Rupert. Thus the adventure concluded.

The Adventurers Assemble
First Quest

A boy runs in to the Weeping Widow Inn, proclaiming loudly that his farm is under attack by a roving band of goblins. Two knights stand to their feet, Yeltsin and Pete uth Drakkon, who proclaim that they will help save the poor farmers. The Lady-Mage Ilyena of Sylvanesti and her bard friend Kyras Half-Elven, who are bored with just sitting around and drinking all day, decide to join them. Off across the hills, along the goat track they went.

Smelling fire as they entered the farm, Pete charged into the yard to see four goblins chasing after chickens, and generally dicking around. After challenging them to surrender, he dismounted and chased them behind the house, followed by the bard and the mage. Yeltsin headed into the farm house, to see some blood. Both knights were shocked to see goblins jumping out everywhere! The Knights and their heroic Silvanesti companions fought them, with the battle turning event being the awesome power of Ilyena’s sleep spell that sent four of the goblins ‘nite nite’. Thought there was one casualty, a small farmer lad, the day was generally saved by the heroes.

Retiring to Kyre, the heroes brought the goblin prisoners before Sir Jormund uth Tammo, who praised their quickness, but admonished the knights on their lack of care for life itself, the highest Measure. He then suggested that the four heroes made a good team, and that they should ride out on patrol. And so the heroes did, slaying some wolves, and rescuing some lost cows, returning the hides and cows to a Rancher’s League hacienda in the south. There the heroes heard news of the lost silver mine in the south east.

Kyras the bard gathered much information from different sources, hinting that there were goblins, ogres or worse occupying the mine. A shifty dude in the Weeping Widow suggested that he might act as a fence for procured goods. The Bard also had a sweet dream of harp music, and the star pattern of Branchala the god of music, and was healed much from his wounds by the sound of life.

The adventurers ended their session sleeping at the hacienda, in comfortable beds of hay.

The story so far...
background information

The world of Dragonlance has a long history, shaped primarily by the Dragon Wars (numbers 1-3). The world has just come out of the grips of a terrible war, called the War of the Lance. In this war, Takhisis the Queen of Darkness, unleashed her dragon armies (one for each color of dragon: red, blue, green, white, and black) on the lands.

The world was ripe for conquest—for many centuries since the Cataclysm, the Gods had remained distant from the world, and there was no priests or priestly magic to heal the lands. Nor were there many wizards, since most people distrusted the use of magic.

But with the oncoming war, and the return of the Gods to to the continent of Ansalon, shit got real, and real dangerous. The Red Dragon Army smashed the Elven kingdom of Qualinesti, while the Green Dragon Army smashed the other Elven kingdom of Silvanesti. The Blue Dragon Army went strait for Solomania, the traditional guardian of the free people of the world.

After much fucking around, and a ton of battle, the Dragon Armies were pushed back, and Takhisis was exiled to the Abyss. But the Solomanian province of Solanthus, where your party has met up, was hard hit by the war. All the farmers were roasted by goblins, and the ranchers survived by moving their herds west. They are only now returning.

Things of Note.
1) Kyre is being rebuilt and the lands are still dangerous. There is much opportunity to advance.
2) The Knights of Solomania control the city and region politically and militarily. You work for them. They are Lawful Good. Always.
3) The Rancher’s League has economic control over the region. They want to secure the best land for themselves and their flocks.
4) The Dwarves of Garnet are very close allies to the Knights, and they will likely lead the assault on Lemmish when it comes.
